Mahatma Gandhi Library, Inc. City-Wide Contests

A project to create a higher awareness of the inspiring life and work of Mahatma Gandhi to promote universal values of Truth, Non-Violence, Love & Service.

The following contests are open to all children in the greater Houston area. The winners of these contests will be recognized at the 1000 Lights for Peace, a celebration of Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday, on Sunday, October 1, 2017. Coloring Contest

Age 5 & Under : No registration required - Visit contest location to participate

Poster Contest

Age 10 & Under : Design your own peace ribbon.
Age 11 & Above: Spread the word of peace.
No registration required - Visit contest location to participate

Speech Contest

Age 10 & Under : Love never claims, it ever gives.
Age 11 & Above: Peace is the goal, non-violence is the way.

iTribute Contest

Middle School & Below : How I practice "service" in my life.
High School : A Force More Powerful, My Perspective.

Essay Contest

Middle School & Below : There is no way to peace. Peace is the way
High School : The seeker after truth should be humbler than the dust.

Mahatma Gandhi Library Contest Rules

The submitted work (Essay/Speech/Poster/Multimedia) should be original work created entirely by the participant and contain no copyrighted information. Once submitted it becomes property of the Mahatma Gandhi Library which may be used and reproduced as the organization deems. It may be offered for public display or publication at some time during or after the contest. The only information that will be released is child's name, age, and hometown. For any questions, please contact Mahatma Gandhi Library event coordinator via email as given below.

Creative Writing / Essay Contest:
In a maximum of 650 words (High School) or 400 words (Middle School and under) submit an essay, poem, or prose on the respective topic. Essays must be typed in a 12-point Arial font & double spaced with word count typed at the bottom. Entries must be submitted in electronic format to [email protected] by midnight, Sunday, September 17, 2017. For information, e-mail [email protected].

iTribute Contest:
Submit a multimedia format presentation on respective topic with a maximum of 10 minutes in length (High School) or 5 minutes in length (Middle School and under). Entries must be submitted in electronic format to [email protected]. Entries may also be submitted on a CD / Flash Drive with all multimedia content embedded on disk/drive and mailed to the Library office along with a printed copy of Entry Form, postmarked by Sunday, September 17, 2017. Speech Contest:
In a maximum of 3 minutes deliver a speech on the respective topic. Speech will be judged on content, presentation and delivery by a panel of judges. Speech Contest will be held on Saturday, September 23rd 2017, 9:00 am, Check-in at 8:30 am. First place winners in each age group will also present their speech at the annual "1000 Lights for Peace" celebration. For information, e-mail [email protected]

Poster Contest:
Express your self artistically on a poster by drawing, coloring, sketching, writing a poem or prose to describe the topic. All posters must be completed in the presence of a MGL representative & within 2 hours maximum. All supplies are provided. Coloring Contest:
